Our Mission
The mission of the Moosehead Regional Land Trust, Inc. is to conserve and protect the headwaters of the Kennebec and Penobscot watersheds and to sustain the tradition of public access to land in the Moosehead region through land acquisition and stewardship.
Who we are and why we formed
We are a non-profit (501(c)(3)) local citizens’ group who have unique journeys that brought us to the Moosehead Region. Some of us were born here, some have been coming here our entire lives, and others have found our way here more recently.
No matter how our journey brought us here, we all have one thing in common–unequivocal love of the region and a commitment to preserve and protect the Moosehead region’s way of life.
Lands surrounding Moosehead Lake are part of the Northern Forest that runs from the Atlantic Ocean to the Adirondacks and includes millions of uninterrupted acres of forest land as well as lakes, rivers, streams, and mountains that are home to a plethora of animal and plant species.
This remote and sparsely inhabited region has a rich history of conservation and recreation, and it has been home to the Wabanaki people for centuries. These wild lands offer us a place to recreate, rest, think, hunt, fish, hike, camp, and replenish our souls.
We are dedicated to preserving the area’s beauty and its valuable contribution to the Great North Woods ecosystem by conserving lands surrounding Moosehead Lake. It is our belief that conservation efforts must accompany development in the area to maintain an ecological balance and maintain public access to undeveloped lands.
What is a land trust?
A land trust is a community-based, nonprofit organization that works to care for and permanently conserve land. Land trusts may acquire land directly, or conserve land that remains the property of willing landowners (conservation easement). Habitat is protected for wildlife and plants; water quality is secured; and access to land for four-season recreation and other sustainable uses is ensured for future generations.
Beyond acquiring and managing conserved areas, many land trusts build strong partnerships with other local nonprofits and community organizations. Land trusts may offer environmental programs in coordination with local schools, and hold workshops and forums on subjects of interest to local residents.
Land trusts can be local, statewide, or regional. Land trusts in Maine collaborate, share ideas, and promote best practices through the Maine Land Trust Network.
